For good reasoning, granite is both durable and beautiful. It also doesn’t require a lot of maintenance. However, if you want to make sure it stays in great condition it does take a little bit of care.
Handyman Alpharetta – Daily Granite Maintenance
Using only a little bit of dishwashing detergent you should wipe your counters down daily. Then use a soft cloth to dry.
If you spill something on the counter top just make sure you clean it up as soon as possible. The most common oversight when it comes to granite is that people think it can’t stain. That’s not actually true. There are certain things that can stain your granite and cause damage such as soft drinks or any type of fruit juice (the acidity causes stains).
Also take great care when cutting any type of acidic fruit such as lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits.
You should always avoid prolonged exposure to heat. While hot pots won’t damage the surface extreme constant temperatures can. So don’t set a pot on your granite counter for a long period of time.
Although granite is highly scratch-resistant because it is one of the hardest surfaces there is, it’s a still great practice to always use a cutting board.
Cleaners to Use
It’s important that you never put bleach or any ammonia based cleaner on your countertops as it will break down the stone and cause stains. Instead use special formulated cleaners that are just for granite or just soap and water.
Sealing Your Granite
Not all granite counter tops require a seal according to the Marble Institute of America but may benefit from a quality sealer product. Most manufacturers place a resin treatment on granite at the factory.
However if you need to seal your granite the sealant product should last ten to fifteen years and be of an oleophobic (resistant to water and oil or fat based stains) type.
Once properly sealed, the stone will be more resistant to stains and damage.
Always follow the instructions of the sealant perfectly to ensure that you do it right and don’t cause damage.
